SGW 7u have to switch inbox if phone dies?

When using watch 7 ultra with Google messages I have to switch inbox if my phone dies . Gave me a message saying phone was offline. Why would it not auto switch to use the cell connection?

I had to use a hidden wearable app feature to finish activating my esim plan.
