Only if you plan on using LTE functions, you can buy a bluetooth watch and still use all of the bluetooth features without a carrier. LTE versions can only be purchased through a carrier.

From amazon it's most likely a bluetooth only version unless it was purchased from a third party seller on their site. You never really know what you're going to get with the 3rd party sellers lol.  A way you can check for the ability to have LTE features is if your watch has a IMEI/HEX number listed anywhere in the settings or on the back of the watch face. If it only has a serial number, then it is indeed Bluetooth Only.

you don't have to buy from the carrier. my wife gave me my smart watch for birthday. was purchased at best buy. I simply called T-Mobile and told them I wanted to set it up and they helped with the rest

Thank you for reaching out. Can I please have your full model number and serial number/IMEI in a private message to check if your watch is LTE capable: http://bit.ly/2JH2rq2
