Get notifications on my cover screen even when phone is open

Is there a way to get notifications on my cover screen even when the phone is open?

Because i don't want to always turn my phone when it is facing down to see my notifications...

To be clear, you leave your device open when not in use instead of closing the device? The cover screen only works when the device is closed unless you using it for camera or video use
