HDMI connection fail with PVRs only

We have had progressive failures in the connection between two TV recorders and our Samsung  TV.  At first we blamed the recorder (Panasonic) and replaced it with another (Fetch Box) but the problems were still there, most recently we had audio only and no video stream arriving on the TV screen.  Here's what's odd:

if we feed video plus audio from one of our iPads or our Windows laptop, we get a regular video plus audio stream from our Samsung TV;

 if we connect either of our recorders to another TV (Panasonic) or to a computer monitor with HDMI, we also get a full service.

This seems to show there's something wrong inside our TV that affects only the signals from the recorders.  We can exclude a physical fault at the socket as we have tested with multiple HDMI cables which work except when we're connecting a recorder to our TV.

Can anyone explain this please?  Has it happened to anyone else?  Thanks.

Please explain!

When the TV was newer we had normal service from our PVR to the TV.  Then we started getting dropouts, usually cured by disconnecting and reconnecting the HDMI cable.  Eventually though we were getting no signal at all.  Our first (Panasonic) PVR was thoroughly checked by an engineer and reported in good order.

As I mentioned too, with our current PVR, we have two faults: (a) no video coming through, only audio - when the PVR is sending either live TV or a recording; (b) regular 2-second dropouts every 30 seconds.

There's no question of copy protection either with live-to-air TV or recordings of it?  We're in Australia, if that helps.  We're not using any paid streaming service.
