HD and UHD TVsIf a work-around qualifies as a solution, you nailed it.
I'd still prefer to go straight Ethernet, but perhaps they hadn't worked out all the angles in 2014 when this set was put together.

What service is this?
It sounds like you need a set top box to decode the Ethernet traffic into something a TV could use.

HD and UHD TVsActually the TV handles the Ethernet and breaks down the signal with its own tuner.
This TV is old, but not that old.
