Update on fix to Samsung blu-ray player stuck in boot loop aka cycling on-off in USA
Success: I had my BD-JM57C/ZA samsung blu-ray player that was "bricked"
repaired by SAMSUNG REPAIR CENTER, Techeim, Inc on 7/23/2020.
This is an account.
Like many others, one of my players (call it player A) became bricked on
6/19/2020 in USA. At the time, this player had firmware (fw) version
BJM53BSPWWB-1020.1 and was configured to automatically connect player
to the internet via WIFI.
I called Samsung usa support, and after dialog, which I presume was to
assure my problem was indeed the "cycling on-off" problem, I was emailed
a free shipping label.
I sent the unit in on 7/15/2020, and they received it 7/23, per an email
update. I received the repaired unit back on 7/28, working correctly,
and with fw upgraded to 1021.0. About as good as one could expect from
Samsung given this dreaded failure in the field. The "Repair Statement"
I received from Samsung Care says:
Repair Description: Reset Up
Well, the microprocessor (uP) resets each time the unit powers up, so I
can only conclude Samsung is being cagey about the root cause of the bug.
But I applaud Samsung for their timely email notifications during the the
repair process. Thumbs down to Samsung on their censorship of blocking
new posts to the original community.samsung.com forum thread regarding
My other identical BD-JM57C/ZA player (call it player B) was not yet
bricked. This is because as soon as player A bricked, before powering
player B on, I moved B out of range of the wifi network it wants to
connect to. Thus, away from its "settings" wifi network, it worked fine
just to play discs. This player has fw version 1019.0.
So what to do with player B? Purposefully brick it so I can send it
in free of charge to get fixed? Try to upgrade fw to 1021.0 which
(presumably) addresses the cycling on-off bug?
I tried the later. On 8/1/2020 from USA I tried to upgrade player B's
fw by online method after updating settings to connect to the local
WIFI network. I got dialog that it couldn't connect to the fw server
even through I knew it was connected to the internet fine (by virtue
of successful youtube streaming). On 8/3/2020 I tried again, and this
time I was able to successfully upgrade player B fw to 1021.0. After fw
upgrade, this player B rebooted fine and streamed a youtube video fine.
