I purchased this range in November. I read a report or two about how easily it turns on. The huge knobs are great. But, let me set the stage for how I know a bad design job from a great one. My father was part of a 2 man team who, in the 1950's, designed the 'Spin Free' knob at Patten Button Co in Knoxville, TN. They manufactured all sorts of plastic products and, yes, buttons, too. Their knob was the brain child of a co-worker who was playing with poker chips and put one atop the other and tried to rotate the top one. The little groves kept him from doing it. He took the idea to my Dad who designed the machine to make injection molds for their Spin Free knob.
This simple knob kept kids from turning on a stove. They could spin the knob and nothing happened until Mom pushed in with a little force and turned it to the desired setting.
My new Samsung is a flat glass surface. It's easily scratched so I purchased a black 'drying mat' just in case casseroles were placed on it in preperation of using the oven. I wanted to keep the surface new looking for as I could.
Imagine my surprise when last week my teen granddaughter yelled something was on fire. She had put together some Christmas treats. None required the use of the surface range. But, sure enough, the left rear burner was bright red. The black pad had melted and stuck to the stove. I was sick. All that money and all that care and here was this mess.
I tried to recreate what happened and how it happened and it was very simple. I bumped the knobs on the left with my mid section and slid my body ever so slightly to the right. Sure as the sun rises tomorrow, that left back burner became flaming red. It was on 'high'.
These are the poorest designed knobs I have ever seen. The concept is good but the force needed to activate them is woefully lacking.
I was able to let the remnants of the black drying mat cool and used a single edge razor blade to gently lift off the black gunk stuck to it.
Shame on Samsung for not checking the this out since there have been prior valid complaints.
I've had our stove magically turn on at least a dozen times this year. We finally figured out it was us just barely brushing up against the stove and it turns on. Just a few minutes ago, we came home after a few hours to find our stove burner on high and the everything hot all around. So scary as it could have easily burned our house down if we had anything flamable nearby. I know it is only a matter of time so I would love to know if anyone has found any solutions? I was wondering if there is any way that we can make the knobs harder to turn on? The stove is only a year and a half old and it is in our vacation home so we haven't even gotten much use out of it yet.
I've had the same issue and with a little one in the house my wife is concerned enough to want me to get rid of it and go with an LG, so I'm praying Samsung comes out with a solution so I don't have to have an oddball appliance and lose the money I spent on it.
I am also very concerned about this issue. We have had accidental turn-on with our gas range and with numerous young grandchildren around have had several potentially dangerous incidents. Fortunately we are vigilant, but all I have to do is brush against it and the thing turns on. My pregnant daughter is finding it frustrating when she is over for Sunday dinners and her belly creates a flame-up on a burner as she brushes against the stove! Ready to sell on craigslist and take the loss, but I, too have concerns for the safety of others. Help!
Our dog has turned the stove on twice already just by leaning against it and almost started a fire! We also have turned it on accidently several times and burned items sitting on top. Once you lean slightly against it, the knob turns automatically to make the burner warm up. I just got off the phone with Samsung and they said that the knobs comply with regulations and there are no replacements because of that. I was enraged that Samsung does not care if my family dies in a house fire that their stove caused. They would not even let me speak to a manager. I am ready to join the class action suit, just tell me where to sign up for it!
One of our cats turned our gas stove on when he jumped up on the stove for some stupid cat reason. We keep the knobs off now unless we are cooking. I had also brushed agains them when reaching into a high above stove cabinet and turned it on. The stove looks terrible without the knobs but better that than a fried cat or burnt down house. It's annoying. A friend of mine had an electric glass top stove where the same thing happened when they brushed past it. It is a definite hazard. They know about it but aren't doing anything? I wish we had bought a GE. Never happened with my GEs.
I've accidentally turned my new stovetop range on 5 times now - it's going to cause a fire! I LOVE the range BUT had no idea how dangerous it is. Is there a fix for the knobs? Please help!
