Fan makes hum/buzz/rattle noise from RF28HMEDBSR.

JUMP TO SOLUTION

Our fridge started making a loud fan buzz. It sounds like it's coming from the upper rear center on the inside of the fridge. It only does it when the doors are closed and you can hear it winding down when you open the door. When you close the doors, it winds up to full speed again. We've had this fridge since March 2015. Any ideas?

Hello there,

The noise is caused by ice buildup around the fan. You can perform a manual defrost to get rid of the ice buildup and get rid of the noise for a while, but only service will correct the original cause.

Move the refrigerator forward approximately 2 inches. If the noise goes away, that indicates the refrigerator was coming in contact with another object, such as the water line or a wall.

Make sure that the unit is leveled:

  • If you look under the front of the fridge, the leveling legs should be in full contact with the floor and the wheels shouldn't be touching the floor at all. If that's not what you see, check out our guide for leveling the refrigerator.
  • To save energy and prevent potential cooling issues, noises, or leaks, your refrigerator needs to be level. This guide will show you how to level your fridge and make minor leveling adjustments.

If you perform a manual defrost, DO NOT USE A HAIRDRYER or any other heat source on the refrigerator to speed up defrosting, as this WILL damage the refrigerator.

To perform a manual defrost:

  • Remove all perishable items and empty the ice bucket(s).
  • Lay down towels underneath the fridge, and keep a good supply of extra towels handy.
  • Unplug the fridge and prop the doors open.
  • As time passes and the towels get wet, swap them out for dry ones, until the towels stop getting wet or at least 24 hours pass.
  • Turn the fridge back on and close the doors. After about 2 hours you can put the food back in.

If the above troubleshooting steps didn't help, here are some service options:

- If your unit was recently purchased, you can check with your retailer on their return/exchange processes.

- If you have an extended warranty you can reach out to them to have service processed.

- If you're within the one year warranty, you can Private message one of our moderators to have service processed. http://bit.ly/2igAXKH

- If you're OUT of warranty, use the following link to locate a service center in your area

http://www.samsung.com/us/support/service/location

Thanks for confirming, if this is the case then service repairs would be recommended. Mind shooting me a message here with the serial number for the fridge:

Do you see any build up of ice in the back by any chance?

Mine is doing the same thing, and yes, there is ice build up. In December it did the same thing. How can I prevent this from happening? I currently have our rrefrigerator's thermostat at 40 degrees, and there is not an excessive opening and closing throughout the day.

Please advise. Thanks!

Thanks, just to confirm does the noise(s) happen even with the ice maker turned off?

It does. Our ice maker is currently off. We do have frost build up on the back wall. When we open the doors the fan stops and it seems to be the fan that is making the noise.

We have had this problem for a while now. We defrosted the fridge and we thought the problem was solved. Two weeks later, it's back and louder than ever. All of the licensed repair people want at least $100 just to come out. Is there a way to prevent this problem (ice buildup around the fan) from happening, or is this just a design flaw in Samsung fridges?

JUMP TO SOLUTION

I have a Samsung RF263BEAEWW with same issue as all the other posts.  I am reaslly bothered that this is such a common issue and Samsung just ignores it.

My issue started with the ice maker freezing/ice build up.  Defrost, then 3-4 weeks later frozen with ice build up again.  My unit is suppose to have the "update", but all that seems to be is some styrofoam (maybe that is why I can get 3-4 weeks vs the common 2).

After going thru that cycle for over 1 year, the ice maker stopped working. Estimated >$600 to fix = hmm $1 store ice trays.  About month later (as in now) the fan noise was building.  Searched and found out I now needed to defrost behind the back cover on the inside. Really? What a joy.

I bought this unit after looking at ConsumerReports and noticing it is a "Recommended" unit.  Semms they would have mentioned the issue (a simple search would have told them), but nothing I have seen so far.  At some point this may become a class action of some kind.  Till then, I will defrost as needed, and save for a replacement.

I am only one person, but I tell everyone not to buy a Samsung fridge.  Actually I was going to buy a glasstop stove and need a new dryer, but think I will pass on Samsung.
