RFG298HDRS/XAA - Freezer Coils Not Cold - Freezer Not Cooling At All (Fridge is Working)

JUMP TO SOLUTION

Hi Samsung team,

My Samsung RFG298HDRS refrigerator (serial #<hidden>), manufactured April 2011) recently stopped cooling in the freezer section only.  The fridge portion still cools adequately.

Upon removal of both evaporator coil panels (fridge and freezer), the fridge coils were heavily frosted over and the freezer coils were clean/room temperature.  All fans in both sections are running well and have continuity where they should.

In manual operation mode, I do not receive multiple freezer RPM options (e.g. FF 1, FF 2, FF 3 in the service manual) but only one "FF" option.  In this mode, the compressor does not seem to react to any output from the outside fridge panel.  When power is disconnected and the unit is re-powered, the compressor appears to go into a high RPM mode for ~15-20 seconds and immediately reduces RPM / becomes quieter.  Changing the freezer temperature and turning on Power Freeze have no effect on the compressor performance.  Manual operation of the fridge defrost function works well and there does not appear to be an issue with the heating element itself (heats up appropriately, has continuity between both terminals).  The fridge defrost sensor did not ohm out correctly at room temperature and at freezing temperatures, and has been replaced, but without remedying the issue described above.

During normal operation, the upper lines of the fridge evaporator coils and outlet to the freezer evaporator coils may be freezing; they registered below -40 C which is the lowest my IR thermometer will read.  Is it possible the refrigerant is stagnating and/or freezing at this portion of the coils and preventing further flow to the freezer coils?  If the compressor is not running at proper RPMs, could that result in less-than-ideal pressure to circulate the refrigerant all the way through the system?  Or is there a valve which controls flow between both sets of evaporator coils?

Appreciate any guidance or further troubleshooting steps Samsung can provide to remedy this issue - thanks very much.

Jeff

Original poster back yet again.  Bad timing to be without a refrigerator and ever more disappointing that Samsung has yet to provide any reply to date.  Kindly asking for some form of response and guidance how to further address these issues.  @SamsungBri

Thanks @SamsungTam.   Can you provide more detail on which component(s) may require servicing based on the details provided in the original post?  E.g. any other troubleshooting steps I should attempt to narrow down potential causes?

You're very welcome! With that, It would be better to get that technician out there so he can actually do a diagnostic test on the unit and at that moment he will be able to further explain the situation and give further instructions on how to move forward if you see the issue again. Regretfully, we have completed all basic troubleshooting steps at this time as well.
