Samsung X5 on macOS : Sharing my disapointment and inform other customers of important product limit

JUMP TO SOLUTION

Hi All,

I'm not looking for any solution here (as Samsung support told me there was no solution) but I would like to share my disapointment about some specific points of the X5 SSD. There is an important product limitation of the X5 SSD when connected to a macOS computer (may be Windows too, I can't tell you).

The first answer of Samsung support was : it's not a Samsung limitation but an Apple limitation. So I made some tests with 2 other "external thunderbolt 3 SSD" products from other manufacturers (OWC and plugable.com) to be sure that the limitation is really an Apple one (I had a doubt about this statement). Guess what ? It's not an Apple limitation, both OWC and Plugable drives worked as expected.

So, what is the defect of the X5 ?

macOS provides a very common, standard and basic system to monitor the health of drives (Hard drives, SSD...). The protocol used by macOS is named S.M.A.R.T (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology). Its primary function is to detect and report various indicators of drive reliability with the intent of anticipating imminent hardware failures.

It is true thar Apple macOS does not support S.M.A.R.T monitoring for external USB drives witouhout a additional driver  but it fully support SMART monitoring for internal drives and devices connected to Thunderbolt 3.

It means that the X5 - a premium, higly priced product - is not able to reports its health status to macOS system and thus you have no possibility to know the current status of the drive nor the memory cell lifetime left.

All other TB3 drive brands I tested where correctly reporting SMART status.

It's a great disapointment. If I had been aware of this limitation before, I would not have bought this product. in 2019, not providing basic security for your precious data stored on a premium product like the X5 is just a shame and it should be clearly indicated in product specifications.

So, for all those for whom data security is important, now you will know that the X5 may not be the best product on this point when used on a macOS system. This does not detract from the quality of manufacture, design and performance of this SSD but data security...

Tests  were done with latest Samsung software 1.6.6 and latest availble firmware for the X5 with macOS 10.13 and 10.14.

Hi !

woaaa ! Smiley Happy Thanks a lot for the quick reply and for this information.

I  have a thread of more than 10 emails with Samsung official support that explains me during days that the lack of support of SMART is normal in macOS. What a shame !

I use macOS 10.14.6 (fresh install) on iMac 4k 2017 and unfortunately cannot upgrade yet to Catalina due to 32bits apps I use for business.

But your feedback is very valuable ! I would have really appreciated it if the support had been more up to the task.

Anyway, Thank you !

Hello Ch-Ab,

I think you may be experiencing an issue with the OS, it may need to be updated potientially?

Or there might be some kind of communication issue.

Please look below at my current screenshots of the X5 working with OSX Catalina 10.15.1

Hi @Memory Product Expert -1 !

I just bought an X5, had it working on my iMac for about 15 minutes, and then it died immediately. Won't power on, nothing. Trying to resolve. 2 Samsung reps have not been helpful at all, but you seem to know your stuff. If an X5 died suddenly, any idea if it's just a dud/needs to be returned, or if there's anything I could do to bring it back to life? Thanks!

Hello userPaznrCrtss,

If the X5 is not receiving power or power light is not turning on, there wouldn't be any troubleshooting possible as the device cannot turn on..  The drive would have to be returned.
