Hello, Welcome to the Community. We understand the difficulty of not being able to access the phone. There are some steps to try to improve the fingerprint sensor.

1. This article provides some helpful tips, in addition to some troubleshooting. https://www.samsung.com/us/support/troubleshooting/TSG01200322

2. Try powering the phone completely off, then powering on in Safe Mode. https://www.samsung.com/us/support/answer/ANS00062983/

3. You can also try rebooting the phone from the recovery menu.

To get to recovery mode:
- Turn off phone
- Once off, hold down volume up and power buttons simultaneously
- When Samsung logo appears, release power button BUT KEEP HOLDING VOLUME UP until the recovery menu appears

- Use volume buttons to navigate

- Use power button to select.

Options under this menu that may help include: Clear Cache Partition, Repair Apps, Reboot phone now.

4. SmartThings Find may allow you to unlock the phone remotely. https://www.samsung.com/us/support/troubleshooting/TSG01001570/

If you are still unable to access the phone, service would be necessary. You can use the following link to find a list of service centers in the U.S. that can do the repair: http://www.samsung.com/us/support/service/location or by contacting customer support at 1-800-726-7864.

Mine was abysmal on my Note 20 Ultra compared to my S8. I found a post online that helped others. I deleted my fingerprints and when I began to input them again instead of just scanning one finger at a time I alternated scanning two fingers for each one you enter. So for fingerprint 1 I scanned both my index and thumb. So every fingerprint is actually a composite. I can now use either finger to unlock my phone and it fixed my issues. My biometric unlock works faster and more reliably than before.

Wow, I have now problem at all;. When I do the initial setup I press gently but also rotate  my finger 20 to 30 degrees each press. My phone reacts instantly.  There's a video by Jimmy is promo
