Why don't phones track stairs climbed?

I'm just wondering why a phone as advanced  as the Note 20 Ultra doesn't track stairs climbed automatically?  It tracks steps, and I know it could do it. The obvious answer is to get us to buy a fitness watch, but there are more reasons to get a fitness watch than to track stairs. I mean, they used to have a heart rate monitor on the phone, for goodness sake.

Even buying a fitness watch you may not get the result you hope for. My Active Watch 2 seems to do an abysmal job of counting steps. I go up and down stairs several times a day and it tells me I have done 1 flight. I really like the watch in general, but I don't know what is going on with stairs.

I had that watch, too, and I had the same experience. It was a good watch, but the fitness tracking leaves much to be desired.
