Galaxy A01 Core proximity sensor

Hi folks, it appears the Galaxy A01 has a proximity sensor but I can get it to work, ie on phone call with phone to earscreen stays on and also loading a sensor test app it shows no response but question is, should it work, ie is it faulty or just non operational by design?

The specs say it uses "virtual proximity sensing" so should still be able to sense proximity else what is the point? Does not answer why it does not appear to work...
