Samsung Galaxy a10e not notifying of messages

My phone was off and I received a text, but my phone didn't notify me! Turns out I had my messages opened, so it assumed I would see the text as it showed up and it thinks it doesn't need to chime. I want my phone to chime even when I have my messages app opened, but I can't find a way to change this setting. Help!

I have Note10 and the only time there is no chime is when screen is on, messages app is open and the conversation thread is open with a person.  All other times there was a chime when new messages arrived
