It should work using the HDMI/USB-C adapter. What steps have you taken so far?

Follow this link to see if your phone supports MHL output. If not, ChromeCast or SmartView will mirror it with WiFi, no cord needed.

I'm very interested in hearing the answer/s to this question. On my roku tv , there's an app that lets me link my phone to the tv but, I'm sure there are different qays to do ot with a hard wire.

Check the HDMI manufacturer's specifications on their website and make sure your phone is compatible. There are a few catches to the HDMI Alt Mode; and, the specification uses the older HDMI 1.4b standard instead of the newer HDMI 2.0b, meaning that HDMI Alt Mode for USB-C connections will be able to output up to 4K resolution, 3D video, and support HDMI-CEC, but won’t offer things like HDR video and other HDMI 2.0b features.
