Can't Setup Two-Step Verification

JUMP TO SOLUTION

I've been trying for two days now to setup two-step verification on my Samsung account to no avail. What happened was I recently factory resetted my phone (Galaxy A71) and I'm trying to restore my data that was previously backed up to Samsung Cloud before the reset. The phone informs me that I must setup two-step verification in order to be able to restore the backed up data but when I try to do so, I get to the point where it says that the verification code has been sent to my phone via SMS, only problem is, I never actually receive any text message with the code.

No matter how many times I've tried, I just don't receive any message with the code via SMS. At this point, I'm beginning to wonder whether the SMS is even being sent at all despite what the UI is stating. I wonder this because WhatsApp didn't seem to have any trouble verifying my phone via SMS when I was re-installing my apps and setting them up. I don't seem to be the only person that is experiencing this issue either, lots of topics on here tells of many others not receiving their SMS also.

To me, this is clearly an issue on your end, either with your software, servers or both. Come on! it shouldn't be this frustrating to utilize Samsung's services.

I feel as though this issue could have been prevented if SMS wasn't the sole option for completing the two-step verification process. Why are there no other options for this, such as a QR code that one can scan with an authenticator app and pair it with the account to receive codes that way instead? Putting all your eggs in the SMS basket is foolish IMO.

Anyway, It would be greatly appreciated if anyone can provide a solution to this problem. I've already tried the suggestions from other topics, but to no avail sadly.

Update,

My country only has two carrier networks, my current number is with Digicel and it still doesn't receive short messages from Samsung for whatever reason, but then I tried sending the code to my old number which is with Bmobile (the other carrier) and it worked, so now I've gotten some backup codes and I've setup an authenticator app so I don't need to be bothered with SMS.

I am still curious as to why it doesn't send to Digicel (my current phone number) though, think I'll have to have a serious discussion with them, I mean they told me that all was well with my account and that they weren't blocking any calls/msg from any numbers but now I'm not so sure about that.

Hey @Kenneth-071 ,

I understand your frustration, I just tested it on my phone and it sent me the code verification within a few seconds. My verification code came from the number 589-88. Have you checked to see if you have that number blocked by any chance? Both on your phone and confirming with your carrier not to block systematic messages? If you've tried both and your carrier says your account is good to go, then the next thing I would try is resetting your app preferences and settings. For both you would go to:

Settings > Apps > 3 Dots (top right corner) > Reset app preferences

and

Settings > General Management > Reset > Settings

I hope one of the solutions I mentioned help you fix your verification problem.

Best,
Jayhon

I have spoken with my carrier and they assured me that they do not block any numbers for call/text to clients unless explictly requested by a client, seeing as how I made no such request I'd say that they're in the clear. I also haven't blocked any number on my phone whatsoever and I've never gotten a message from '589-88' before either.

I tried the suggested resets, but to no avail, I seriously think that the issue is on your end, is it possible that you can verifty the this 589-88 can send messages to my phone number? Or better yet, is it possible that I can receive my verification code via email or by some other means other than SMS?

Hey @Kenneth-071 ,

Unfortunately, I can't do anything on my end. From the times I've seen this issue, it stems from your phone number. Those that have had the same issue as you have contacted their tech support from their carrier and requested the specialist to remove a block on short text codes. It's all I can recommend as it seems you don't have this blocked from your device's side of things. There's always the option of performing a Factory Data Reset, but if it still doesn't work then that would just confirm it was not a setting on your phone.

Re: Can't Setup Two-Step Verification

I have already spoken with several folks over at my carrier and they state that there is nothing wrong with my account and that they do not block any text codes/msgs of any kind or length, so it doesn't seem as though the problem is accuring on their end. Also (and this is just a side note), If there are carriers that do block certain types of messages on their end based on lenght, why wouldn't Samsung not just pad out the lenght of their SMS so that it doesn't get filtered as s-p-a-m if they know that this could be an issue, especially if this SMS verification method is mandatory with their services?

Furthermore, I've factory reset my phone twice now and I'm still experiencing this issue, and as mentioned before, other services that use SMS verification works just fine it really seems to be an issue with Samsung's services in particular, so I doubt its an issue with the phone itself.

I've submitted a Question Ticket and currently awaiting their responce. I would call in person but its an international number meaning I would have to pay international rates on the call.

To me, it seems that some numbers/regions are just problematic with their verification servers while others are not.
