Have you tried settings/apps/messages/notifications? Should give you various options for sounds and popups

There is also another option: Settings>advanced features>smart pop-up view. See if this is what you are looking for

Restart the phone, back up your txt messages with smart switch or samsung cloud, then clear app cache and data then relaunch app and have some one send you a test text.
