Why were the chat functions of samsung messages removed from the app? Having a samsung phone I would much rather use the samsung messages app instead of Google.

Google and Samsung are partners now with their co-development of Wear OS. If I remember correctly, Google Messages will be the default moving forward. This may be why it was removed?

If that's the case, why not just merge both apps to create a better experience. For all users?

That's essentially what's happening. It's just being done in phases.

Because Samsung Messages is the intellectual property (IP) of Samsung and uses universal SMS/MMS (and RCS, if your carrier supports it) technology, which requires a network carrier plan, and Google Messages is the IP of Alphabet Inc, which uses RCS and only requires an internet connection. These are seperate companies. Samsung would have to purchase Google's IP of Google Messages to merge them together.

Nor can Samsung force your carrier to adopt RCS. (Don't get me started with Apple's involvement in this.)

It is a complicated issue with a very long history going back to the 1980s.

I have no chat features in Samsung Messages on my S21 Plus. Verizon said it's because I'm on their pre-paid plan. Total BS so I use Google Messages.
