Discontinuing Samsung messenger is the wrong move. Themes and fonts that people paid for are not accessible through Google messages. But on top of that despite android being google owned a lot of people do not want google ingrained in everything we do. I deleted my personal google account a few years ago and use a dupe which you shouldn't need to do to use certain features, the only google apps I use are the play store and maps. I much prefer Samsung messages and if I wanted google everything I would've bought a pixel. I know there are other app choices but why is a third party needed for a basic cellphone function

The integrated theming capabilities of Samsung Messages, which dynamically adapt to the user's wallpaper, represent a significant aesthetic and functional advantage. This unique feature distinguishes Samsung Messages from other available messaging applications.

As a long-standing Samsung customer, having utilized devices since before the original Note series and consistently purchasing Note models thereafter, I have valued the distinct features inherent to the Samsung ecosystem. While the integration of the Note series into the S series, retaining core Note functionalities, was an acceptable transition, the recent changes regarding the messaging application are concerning. My preference for Samsung products stems from their proprietary features; if I desired a Google-centric experience, I would opt for a Pixel device. Samsung has historically offered an unparalleled mobile experience for my needs, and I had anticipated remaining a loyal customer. However, these recent developments are prompting a re-evaluation of that commitment.

The visual appeal and unique theming of Samsung Messages have consistently garnered positive attention from others who observe it on my device, often expressing surprise at its sophisticated design. The prospect of transitioning to an alternative application that I perceive as inferior to Samsung Messages is unwelcome.

A strategic integration of the strengths of both platforms could yield a highly compelling and robust messaging solution. I intend to continue utilizing Samsung Messages for as long as feasible, but I am actively seeking alternatives, as Google Messages does not currently offer a comparable experience.

Your observation highlights a common tension in software design. While you may complain that Google Messages is not aesthetically pleasingโ€”describing it as dull, lacking custom themes, or having too much white spaceโ€”it prioritizes, and often succeeds in, providing superior functionality.

Google is now working to improve the aesthetics of the app by tweaking layouts and adding "expressive" elements, suggesting that while functionality is the foundation, aesthetics are necessary for long-term user satisfaction.

Even if one were to belive that Google would know aesthetics if it fell on their heads (not that Samsung's were beautiful either), what is that "superior functionality" you speak of?
There is still a significant minority of people who care about organization, privacy, and other little things instead of bubble color and typing indicators (seriously, typing indicators in an SMS app? If that's what is important to you, might be time to move to a real chat app in the first place?)

Every time someone posts a screenshot of their theme I just can't!

Agree.  Makes me kind of glad the app is going away.  The only thing worse would be if those themes were shared with me when I get a text from someone.

Seriously, your mundane life is not something Google wants to spy on and read your texts. Google Messages is end to end encrypted!

๐Ÿคฃ You just don't understand how adtech (and Google is first and foremost an advertising company) works.

Oh, we understand, not only do we not care, there is a way to turn off targeted advertising.  Advertisements are going to hit you one way or the other, it may as well be for something you were interested in anyway.  And targeting you for marketing is not a violation of privacy, they are not collected personal data or reading your messages.  The NSA is reading your messages.
