There's a lot of real estate on the top of the message app. Can that space be used to add a status option like whatsApp?

It's made that way so people with big phones don't have to stretch out to reach the top message which is usually the most recent.

Top of messaging app is  by design as it allows user to be able to perform most of action from mid to bottom of the screen in the easily reachable area while holding the phone.
