Tablets
I purchased this tablet about 2 years ago and now the screen at maximum brightness, is about half as bright as my Samsung phone at maximum brightness. There's clearly something wrong with it. My question is whether it's worth taking it to some repair place or is repairing the problem likely to be too expensive to make it worthwhile? I'm disabled and have limited mobility otherwise I would give it a shot.

Adaptive brightness is turned off. And the screen mode is set to vivid.

Tablets always have lower brightness than cellphones. They are generally used indoors unlike cellphones that are used more often outdoors. This has always been the case. The Tab S8 peak brightness is 483 nits with a sustained peak of 460 nits. There is nothing you can do about it other getting the Tab S 11 that has 1600 nits of peak and 1000 nits sustained brightness using high brightness mode.

The tablet was previously much brighter, worked fine ever since I had it, and just recently it suddenly became much dimmer.

I wouldn't spend any money to repair it, first of all you have 2 very knowledgeable and reliable people informing you of the brightness specs of your device, and secondly, if you still think your screen brightness has taken a dive recently, you can buy a Tab S9+ at Best Buy for $159 (I just did, 3 days ago).
Best of luck to you!

Who are the two people? I just see one. I've had the tablet for 2 years. It used to be much brighter. It is now suddenly much dimmer. I don't think I will buy another Samsung tablet if they only last two years.

Sorry, you're right - there was only one. And I can totally agree with your view on buying another Samsung tablet. I suppose you just have to decide whether the 2 year brightness problem is an anomaly, or not. Maybe just research other people who own this tablet and see if any of them have had the same problem. Have a good day.
