My washer started to smell like burned cable when I loaded a comforter. It got stuck at rinsing cycle and I didn’t see it move. Never had the issue before. I purchased the washer almost 2 years ago. Could be the motor or some rubbery band?

You're describing a serious issue — let's break it down:

Burned cable smell: This usually points to overheating of either the motor, wiring, or a belt (some belts are rubber-based and can smell when slipping/burning).

Stuck on rinse, no movement: This suggests the washer couldn’t turn the drum properly. Comforters are heavy when wet, which can overload the machine. If it couldn’t spin, the motor may have overheated trying.

First time this happened: That's good (no long-term wear yet), but now there may be damage if something overheated.

Possibilities:

Motor: Could be overheating or partially burned out if it tried too hard to spin a heavy load.

Drive belt (if your model uses one): It could be slipping or melting.

Capacitor (if your washer uses a start/run capacitor): If bad, it won't help the motor start turning a heavy load.

Wiring: Possible loose or damaged wiring heated up under heavy load.

Transmission/gearbox (less common but possible): Could have jammed under the stress.

Next steps I recommend:

Unplug the washer completely and don't run it again until inspected — to avoid further damage or even fire risk.

Sniff around: After unplugging and letting it cool, sniff around the back panel and underneath — is the burned smell stronger anywhere? That could help pinpoint motor vs belt.

Visual check: If you feel comfortable, remove the back or bottom panel to look at the belt (if visible) and the motor. Melted belts usually leave black residue.

Warranty check: Even if it's almost 2 years old, many washers have 2-5 year warranties on motors and drivetrains. Check your purchase details — you might get it repaired under warranty.

Call a repair tech if you don't see an obvious belt issue — especially if still under warranty.

Would you like to tell me the brand and model of your washer? I can give you a more targeted guess or even show you where the belt or motor is located!

@Ijf  It’s recommended to unplug your unit and contact an authorized service center to have it diagnosed to see what’s could be causing the problem.
