When the first unit started giving me trouble I spent quite a bit of time with no luck in fixing it. Thinking my issue was only the unit I was working on, I ordered an on-line new replacement, due to arrive Sunday (tomorrow). The ordered unit was NOT a Sumsung brand. OK, here's an update. Tried my wife's upstairs  Samsung Blu Ray BD-J5700 that I said worked ok yesterday after the manual update. Well, today it has the SAME loop-de-loop problem as the others. I have three Samsung Blu Ray BD-J5700 in the house. Living room, bedroom and wife's upstairs den area. Two of the three units have developed this on/off loop since yesterday, living room and bedroom. Went upstairs and the one there had a pop-up screen that said an update was available. Did the update and that unit works fine. Important point upstairs unit does NOT have automatic update on. Can't tell about the two units downstairs if they have the auto update selection ON, but if they do I would suggest an auto update might be the problem.
