I just received an Android update from Samsung for my Note9 512GB, unlocked, purchased directly from Samsung. My baseband version is now: N960U1UEU1ARJ5 THEY HAVE NOW INCLUDED THE CAMERA SHUTTER NOISE ON/OFF CONTROL IN THE CAMERA SETTINGS! Thank you, Samsung, for finally acknowledging that issue. My only request would be that in the future, you figure out how to communicate with your customers like me about what's going on and what to expect when we report an issue. I've been left hanging for months now, not knowing if anything was going to be done for my issue or not. The same is still taking place with other Note9 customers who are having delay problems with the operation of their camera. For today though, for me at least, thank you for resolving my issue.

If you go to the software update information for your device, what information link is at the bottom of your page when you view the details for 'Last update information' ? Here's the link for where my device takes me, and there's no updates more recent than September, which I have found odd, because it seems like there's been one or two since then, but they haven't appeared for my device. I bought my Note 9 512GB directly from Samsung, the day they announced it and started taking pre-orders. http://doc.samsungmobile.com/SM-N960U1/TFN/doc.html

I too am still at the ARH6 release, with a 512GB Note 9, and no sign of any newer operating system update being available yet. I check every day, too.....

This is Samsung's elite, top of the line, most expensive, most advanced device released, to date. Having to try and incite a public relations battle against them to fix this problem reflects terribly on them. Yesterday I realized they've also removed another feature from this phone that should never have been removed. The camera app no longer includes the feature for taking sherical 360 degree photos, like Google's Photoshpere. People are saying it's because Samsung wants to force people to buy the separate Gear 360 camera. That's another terrible move by them too, if true. A typical user who'd take sherical 360 degree pictures, on the spur of the moment somewhere, isn't going to also have a Gear 360 in their pocket all the time, just in case. Stupid.

It's an unlocked model, direct from Samsung. This is ALL on Samsung. Can you either help me get to who I need to in the company, or, at the very least. remove the 'Solved' flag from this thread? It's quite an insulting passive-aggressive statement by SamsungCole in his refusal to back down from his opinion that the issue is solved. Thank you for your assistance.

Update: My Samsung Note 9 512GB, carrier unlocked model, just received the latest firmware update from Samsung. Firmware build number: M1AGQ.N960U1UEU1ARH4 Samsung has NOT fixed (restored) the missing option on the camera software to enable the user to TURN OFF the artificial camera shutter noise made when taking pictures. Am I surprised by this latest non-development? No. Am I going to stop pursuing this issue? No. Between the moderator here who took it upon himself to refuse to withdraw his/her personal 'Soved' flag they placed on this thread, and Samsung remaining silent on the issue, as the dude said, "This aggression will not stand man!" It was funnier coming from Jeff Bridges. It's not funny coming from Samsung.

As I have received no further correspondence from SamsungCole, even after repeated requests for escalation of this issue, I'm concluding that's a conscious decision by him/her. I'll be taking that up with Samsung as well, in addition to the issue with the withheld option to disable the artificial camera shutter noise.

The information in this article was given to me by our Admins and HQ team who review the entirety of the Samsung Community. As long as you keep this thread marked 'Solved', you, your Admins and HQ team are all running away from this issue. The thread will not be solved until Samsung can provide a satisfactory explanation to justify this unjustifiable situation, or, they change their arbitrary and capricious decision to withhold this option and commit to restoring it in the next firmware release. Please understand that this issue is not going to go away until it is satisfactorily resolved. Thank you for your continued efforts in that regard.

@Samsung_Stephanie wrote: Hey guys, I know there are some hard feelings on this topic. However, I wanted to share an article that was brought to my attention with you all: www.samsung.com/us/support/troubleshooting/TSG01002007/ I'm sorry for any inconveniences this may cause. I'm sorry, you just seem to not understand, and keep adding insult to injury. The above referenced article only serves to create further inflammation. It's absolutely untenable that Samsung is explaining what amounts to them saying that carriers can choose to include the shutter sound control in their builds of the firmware, but Samsung is choosing to withold the feature. Again - when someone buys an unlocked device directly from Samsung, they implicitly are saying they expect Samsung will supply them with everything the device is capable of, rather than having to face the concern with a device from a carrier and finding the carrier has put themselves in between Samsung and themselves, the owner, and chosen to compromise their access to full access to all features and capabilities of the device in some way. How have we come to this, where Samsung has actually become the party witholding functionality, from it's MOST DEDICATED, HIGHEST PAYING CUSTOMERS/SUPPORTERS? Again I ask, for at least the THIRD time, will you PLEASE withdraw the personally opinionated 'Solved' designation from this topic, and will you PLEASE either escalate this within Samsung yourself, or else provide me with contact information for where I can meaningfully pursue that effort myself? And I reiterate: Please? Thank you for your understanding.

@VerbumVeritum wrote: @johnpjackson I did some research. There doesn't seem to be a clear answer to this. I notice the privacy issue was previously discussed. Korea and Japan both have strict laws about camera shutter sound not being able to be muted at all, and that might have something to do about it. The states may have their own individual laws, which carriers may be able to get away with until it becomes an issue, depending on the state. Samsung has done nothing to address anyone's privacy laws because they've done nothing to prevent anyone from muting the artificial shutter sound. Simply turning down the system volume to zero mutes the sound. I don't want to be treated by Samsung or you like an annoyance because I'm looking for Samsung to restore a fundamental Android option of being able to disable artificial camera shutter noise. This is a $1,300 phone. I don't want to be told that I have to be satisfied with being asked to go and fiddle around with my system volume before and after wanting to take pictures, every time, and I don't want to have to bog my device down otherwise with having to use Goodlock's IFTT routines, etc. I want the option to choose to disable the artificial camera noise available as is natively part of Android. How many times do I have to ask to have the 'Solved' flag removed from this thread? Do I sound like I've gotten a solution to my problem with this device?

@VerbumVeritum wrote: @johnpjackson I honestly don't believe this is on Samsung, as other users have stated that some of them do have the option based on their carrier, regardless of locked or unlocked status. What is your point? Samsung is the source of this device and the Google Android firmware it operates on. That some carriers choose to toggle the feature's availability on in the source code for their builds of the firmware just shows that Samsung is choosing, for whatever reason, to withhold the option from its customers who buy the device directly from them. The implication that a Samsung customer has to go and buy the device from a carrier, instead of Samsung, in order to receive a totally generic and universal option like this is inappropriate. Please go ahead and remove the 'Resolved' status from this thread. The matter won't be resolved until Samsung either provides a satisfactory reason for witholding the option, or they do the right thing and put it back in a new firmware build.

@VerbumVeritum wrote: @johnpjackson there is always a work around for this. I have the Good Lock 2018 app and have set a routine to automatically turn off all sound when the camera app is opened. It automatically returns the sound to the last setting when I exit the camera app. It works great. I have an unlocked device too on Sprint. It doesn't seem to matter whether it is unlock or not, carriers still seems to matter. Pretty weird. I actually figured out this workaround earlier in the week. However, that doesn't mean I don't want Samsung to correct the problem. One of the major reasons why I wanted the Note9, with 512GB of storage and 8GB of RAM, is because no matter how much hardware performance increases, application performance and responsiveness always declines, as time goes on and the number of files you're dealing with, and cached data, etc., rises. Having a workaround that requires the system to run through the external routines of the Goodlock app just adds extra overhead going into and out of the camera app. It sounds minor, and it probably is. But when the alternative is using a feature built into the camera application itself that eliminates the need for that entirely, I want it. And in a device that Samsung stands upon as being superpowerful, affirming it's intent to support the wishes of so called 'power' users, I believe I'm tracking straight down the center of the road with this. Disabling and hiding ANY features in the native version of this device straight from Samsung is just plainly the wrong thing for Samsung to do. If people want someone to play nanny for them they can go buy their device from a carrier who's named themselves to that position.

This question is NOT solved. I don't have a carrier branded Note9. I have an unlocked Note9 purchased directly from Samsung. There's no doubt that in the firmware from Samsung that my Note9 is running, which is the latest update from Samsung, Samsung has removed the otherwise normally present option in Android to disable camera shutter noise. Please remove the flag indicating this issue is resolved. Thank you. @userbcMKA9DSlI wrote: shutter sound option is depending on the carrier of the phone. it was like that on gs9 as well. for example, sprint gs9 doesn't have shutter sound on/off option. i dont know why this is big now.

@VerbumVeritum wrote: @johnpjackson you're not forced into using the default messaging app or camera app. There are more than a few to choose from. I hope you find one that works best for you! Thanks for the encouragement. I know I'm not required to use those apps, but really, I prefer to, because usually they are the most practical and reliable. And in this case, I still believe that about them overall, and I'm only very frustrated by the fact that the issues I have with them are that they simply have taken away access to simple but fundamental functionality they've provided in them previously. I can't think of a satisfactory explanation for why they'd do that. I will probably keep making noise at them about it until someone there can give me one.

Samsung throws their customers under the bus when they arbitrarily remove features they've provided in the previous recent few generations of the same products, that their customers have made use of and appreciated having. I keep finding more examples of this. The camera shutter sound control is the first one. The second one is not being able to choose custom alert sounds for individual people in your contact list. The latest one is I just discovered is you no longer can swipe left or right in the Messages list view to call or email a person who sent you an SMS/MMS. How many more of these needless, bizarre elimination of functionality, for arguably very practical features, are there going to be with this device now?

The net result is that they didn't address AT ALL the concern the ill conceived law is about, AND, they trashed all their customers to do it. Dumb.

I usually have my volume muted But on the other hand, I remember this being a really big deal years back and it was about privacy something something and people not liking being unknowingly photographed? It might have gotten passed into a law that prohibits shutter sound doing its thing "secretly"? I assume that's the general idea lurking around the whole stupid issue, yes. But what Samsung has done in response is absurd. You can mute the phone to stop the fake shutter noise. All Samsung has done is victimize every single one of its customers without even having any success to show for it, AT ALL, for the claimed objective for doing so.

I found another apparently (and inexplicably) missing (removed) feature in my carrier unlocked Note9 that I bought directly from Samsung. In the Contacts app, you can no longer choose a custom sound alert for incoming SMS/MMS messages for individual contacts. You can still choose a custom ringer sound, but not a custom message alert sound. This is ridiculous. Samsung seems to be very afflicted with getting so focused on a handful of specific items when coming up with new iterations of these devices that they completely lose sight of others and allow them to be indiscriminantly altered or dropped, purposefully or inadvertantly. It's not understandable or acceptable, for the premium experience they work so hard to cultivate, and then set a price for.

That's definitely missing from my device, and a Samsung chat rep already confirmed for me that's intentional, and they can't do anything about it. They opened a ticket on my request though. Which I know will go nowhere, unless I can maybe make enough angst for them to suffer from, somehow. I hate feeling like that's my only option.

$1,300 for my Note9 and Samsung still believes it's their right to prevent me from disabling the artificial camera shutter sound when taking pictures with it. The battle over this issue with them has been going on for years. It's completely ridiculous and totally unacceptable. Who else of you here is concerned by this small but enormously frustrating situation? Please note: This issue is **NOT** 'Solved!', contrary to what a forum moderator here wants to insist.
