Under the default text message app, yes you can assign a specific tone to an individual BUT you must maintain that text message thread forever and ever amen to keep that assignment. Once that thread is deleted, there goes your customization. The other bug is, take 2 message threads. Assign tone A to friend A. Assign tone B to friend B. Now while texting friend A, you get Tone A and the same for friend B. Now put both friends in a group message at the same time. Friend A replies and you get default tone. Friend B replies and you get default tone. Most of my conversations are group. Friends, family, Co-workers... Assigning the custom tones to the individual did this. In the past, the tones assigned to the contact came through in group messages. Moving the customization from the contacts app to the message app took away this feature. Now with Textra (which is now my standard) I don't have to maintain a copy of every message. They fixed that. But the group message but still exists. Yes, I can assign a custom tone to the group thread. But that doesn't tell me WHO in that group is replying. This is something that I use every day. For work, for family. I get a text message from my alarm company. I want something loud and nasty. I get a message from my pharmacy wanting to know if I need my meds renewed, I want a quiet beep. If I hear a specific Tone, I know it's my oldest daughter whether she's texting me, or texting the family in a group. I've been griping and complaining about this since the day I got my Note 9 and This one feature almost drove me away from this phone. Ok. Soapbox is put away for now until the next time this subject comes up. LOL
