The aforementioned app (Samsung Band Selector): I preface by saying I dunno that it'll work the same way if installed after the system update that nixed its most desired function. I installed on my S22U (Vz locked) when I received in Feb. The "Launch Band Selection" option of the app is locked out. BUT "More Network Settings" still works. And pressing this reveals the Mobile Network options which Vz has opted to otherwise hide... you can still turn 5G off/on from here. Sometimes you get an app crash error but it still works.

It'd be intriguing if you're proven right about the purpose of that spot/indentation in the right edge. Would make me wonder how many phone cases have accounted for it and were designed to leave that spot exposed (not my Spigen case).

That is peculiar behavior. The screen shot you posted makes it clear you have some savvy with this device, not sure a lot of ppl know how to find that setting for AOD. So the initial response I was prepared to offer - check DND/Sleep settings - I dismiss, as you're sure to have verified that's not the cause. You said this happens overnight WHILE charging... I'd wonder if there's an issue with the charging station. Maybe you can try a wired recharge a couple nights to see if it occurs? If willing, be sure to turn off the Super-Fast charging since it'll be plugged in for several hrs (just my opinion but I think it's best). Bug report submission if the issue happens on wired charger, too - or with a different wireless charger (which could be an alternate test option instead of wired charger, if you have a different model available than what you usually use).

There were a couple posts in the community about it. I actually thought you were an OP for one of the ones I read, and this post was a follow-up lol. B/c the other posts state similar: it's bad when disembarking, but by the next day/afternoon it is back to normal. I'm not a frequent flyer these days. But I DO have plans for the fall. This phone is my lifeline in more ways than one: sound is crucial & can't be hindered for a portion of time. Really hope some answers are presented, but what I read (what you prob caught in the blogs you found) does make this seem like a physical quality issue, rather than some quick nifty fix.

VZW user here. 5G is about 50+% faster than 4G LTE in most places I go. When I visit an acquaintance or am out shopping, I get about 160-175 Mbps 5G, versus 80-100 Mbps on 4G. Sadly the one place where the difference would be vital - my work office - blocks signals badly (both 4G & 5G). I have to go out to the parking lot when I download podcasts lol. I downloaded the Samsung Band Selector app so I could "downgrade" to 4G while at work (the pains of a Vz-locked phone), b/c the battery hit isn't as bad compared to when it's hunting for/trying to suckle off a weak 5G signal. But it's also tedious remembering to switch back & forth, so oftentimes I don't bother. Luckily while the battery drain in the office isn't so dramatic, it's not so bad as to making it necessary to recharge frequently based on my usage behavior - could be different for a heavy SoT user, but I think in most cases the battery ought to get ppl thru a day on a single charge.

@tom2055 What would you be upgrading from? I upgraded from Note10 Plus (4G) so a lot of upgrades for me: 5G connectivity, 120hz display, significant camera specs change. With these additions/improvements my battery life is similar to what @SuoerOvni described, maybe a little better. And I'd say it's about the same as my Note10 Plus was, so in that regard I didn't lose anything. I don't need much SoT, as I rely mainly on notifications to reach my Galaxy Watch via BT; I use the camera frequently & do about 3-4hrs listening to downloaded pods per day. Brief instances of browser surfing or tweeting each day... I can go 1.5-2 days between charges as SoT is about 3hrs during that span. Do you have good 5G coverage in your area? If not, that is going to impact the battery life if you're often in places w/o WiFi. My workplace has crappy coverage & I notice the effect on battery VS when working at home.

Someone commented a suggestion but it looks to have disappeared. I didn't want to respond until I had a chance to test it: it works, but is still far from ideal. This Vz-locked S22U: if "Smart Update" is utilized then I can ensure at least that system updates don't download and install while I'm at work/not on Wi-Fi/in a building with weak mobile signal that'll cause the phone to heat up while downloading a large update from my jeans pocket. This function is different than I remember it being: I had "Smart Update" on unlocked devices and I'm sure that it still let you manually download whenever you wanted - the option just delayed installation until a pre-set time. Whelp, doesn't work this way now. The May security update that was released a couple days ago downloaded during the time frame I set for "Smart Update" so it occurred while I was at home and asleep. Still not ideal b/c it happens w/o warning. Luckily I had sufficient chr arge on the phone, as I don't charge while sleeping; I changed the time to when I'd be awake - if I see it start w/low charge I can plug it in - but I worry it could still download/update during a rare occasion where I might be out & about. What if I have a late night drive & am relying on GPS nav, and suddenly the phone automatically shuts down to install an update? Anyway "Smart Update" is the solution to this problem. But it's still a cruddy option to have to rely upon - why is there not an ad hoc dow load option available? If the poster who origi ally suggested using "Smart Update," whose comments disappeared, sees this: thanks so much for the recommendation.

So, folks: it happened again today. Latest system update automatically downloaded while I was in the office. I noticed it b/c I felt my thigh start to bake again where my phone was in my pocket. I noticed that it turned my Wi-Fi on. But b/c I was at work and do not use my job's Wi-Fi, the phone wasn't able to connect to it and downloaded over network instead. And with the poor 4G/worse 5G signal in my office, that meant a slow crawl that heated the phone up since it was in my pocket. I took it out so it could breathe and it cooled down a bit, but generally stayed warm until the download finished (I could've turned the mobile connection off but chose to let things proceed). The prior suggestion and actions I performed in Google Play Store did not resolve. The Software Update section in Settings still does not offer an option to turn auto-download off. No such settings found in Developer Settings. Anyone have other ideas? Am I the only Vz-locked S22 Ultra owner experiencing this??

I suppose I could check there. My concern is why would it be necessary to augment from there, when it hasn't been previously? Seems odd that the option would be hidden or actually taken away, allowing a system update to download anytime/anywhere outside of your control. Maybe it's just an odd lockout on the Vz-locked version? My last two Samsung phones were unlocked, and had the menu option that @user_ams007 suggested checking for.

They can (and almost always do, in some degree, despite what they may say). In my office, they come down on ppl who use high bandwidth on the work Wi-Fi - streaming Netflix, for example. WHO can see what varies: no one in my office can access the nitty gritty (I'm IT), but our national IT has a group responsible for monitoring and they collect all activities. I'd say if you're reading Yahoo or ESPN or checking the weather then no prob; but would not use for online banking or commenting negatively about the workplace on Twitter or FB (Meta?).

Smart Update allows for a system update to auto-install at a designated time. So instead of having to manually start it after it has downloaded, you can set to auto - install only while you're asleep, for instance. But the setting only applies to installing and has no impact on the update auto-downloading. "Three dots" here is to access Permissions for Software Update (Location, Nearby Devices, Storage).

Good catch, it is Vz-locked. Already had those options set as such. Didn't have app download set to Wi-Fi only so did just change that as well. Guess we'll see; I appreciate your responses!

I'm not seeing the option you describe. There's a Smart Update option, which you'll see is turned off and was also turned off when the system update auto-downloaded. Am I misunderstanding where to look/what to click?

While at work last wk my pants pocket (phone pocket) became incredibly warm. Thought I was imagining it, but when I grabbed my S22 Ultra a minute later it was very warm. I found that it was downloading the first major software update. I figure the warmth was from being in my pocket + the case I have on it + downloading over 5G with a weak signal (not good in my workplace). I would never download a system update unless I was at home on Wi-Fi - I know Android software updates don't count against data for us non-unlimited data dummies, but I do prefer to have the phone in open space and charging while downloading/installing a big update. So may as well use Wi-Fi lol. My question: how do I turn off the auto-download for Android system/software updates? I'd prefer just a notice of availability so I can manually start the download later.

It is a relief to know I'm not the only one & this isn't the result of me receiving a defective TV. The reason I bought my Samsung UHD (besides upgrading from Vizio FHD) is b/c of the capability to wirelessly broadcast video media from my PC to the TV (Vizio hadn't mastered this). Loved the idea so much I replaced both my living room TV and bedroom TV. Bedroom TV is still a winner.... But the situation with my living room TV having a receiver & PC patched into it - with this oddball source auto-switch - is a nightmare. I thought I'd just muffed up somewhere; reading now that it's a deliberate setting implemented by Samsung, with no option to disable or modify, really upsets me. Which would be easier for them? To add an option for disabling this setting entirely? Or to give modification control? For instance: the issue I face is that my receiver is used for Blu Ray player + gaming console... but it's most frequently used for my 6.1 audio setup to hear broadcast television (HDMI 1). So it sucks that I turn the receiver on to get better audio for a sporting event, and the TV switches to HDMI 2; so I have to press remote buttons and flip it back. Ideally this auto-switch option could just be disabled; but to me it'd also be acceptable if I could choose which source the powering device activated. If I could make my receiver (patched to HDMI 2) trigger "HDMI 1" (my cable box) as its default, then it'd be zero problem for me. Having stumbled across this discussion a few weeks ago, I've been forced to give inquiring minds negative feedback about Samsung - I've had several friends & family looking to buy new TVs recently. I don't want to lead anyone into suffering the same aggravation that myself & other folks have expressed here: I hope & pray that Samsung takes these comments seriously and makes the desired changes. It sounds like they made their decision to implement this based from opinions of ppl who are media-deficient & know nothing about how modern living room media setups are done.
