no sound through optical for built in apps

QLED and The Frame

I purchased a Q80A QLED 4K Smart TV and I'm having an odd problem.  I've connected it to my Yamaha receiver via digital optical and discovered the built in apps produce no sound, while devices connected via HDMI work perfectly fine, the receiver is identified and I'm able to control it via the TV's remote.  I've tested it on Samsung TV Plus and several other apps.  They all only give audio through the TV speakers.   When I switch it to optical with an app open, I get the "Device Care" message recommending I troubleshoot the soundbar.  That does nothing.  Any ideas what the problem is?
