Back button

So I've noticed when I'm in an app or settings or just doing anything when I hit the back button at the bottom of screen it takes me to desktop/homepage and sometimes it completely closes out the app I'm in. Not sure what's going on but it's not normal...

When swiping from the bottom from the opposite side of the back gesture, are those apps still in the recent list?
