Are you storing contacts on the phone, in your Samsung account, or in a Google account? Mine are all stored in a Google account and are all still there.
You can check by going to the 3-dot menu in Contacts and tapping "view by storage location." You can move contacts stored on the phone to Google or Samsung accounts.
