Within the settings menu under Google Services, All Services, and System Services, you will find numerous Google System Updates that are routinely pushed to your device. Some of these are essential for resolving functional issues on your phone.

For instance, when a significant problem occurred with Microsoft account logins, it was resolved through an update pushed to the Android System WebView. WebView enables your device to open mobile-scaled portals for various applications, including banking, Amazon, and streaming services, all of which rely on it for login processes.

Please note that not all of these system services update automatically via security patches, so some must be updated manually. I personally check for these updates on a daily basis.

The MAINLINE project refers to the Google Play system updates.

I personally update some as well. Not sure if your part of the Google services beta program but there should be an option to join in that same area where you update those services
