Always on Display not always on

I have noticed many times when I pick up my phone, AOD is off including the fingerprint location. I tend to leave my phone on the desk and I'll glance at the aod for notifications and time but more often than not, the screen is off completely. 

Anyone else notice this?

Yep mines is doing the same.trying to figure out what's going on but still doing it.
