Google messenger stuck on verifying number

Trying to chat using Google messenger but it's stuck on verifying number. I don't see a button to verify.

Turn off your SIM card and then turn it back on. This should fix your issue but you might have to repeat every now and then.

Use Samsung messages. Works without having to turn off and on the SIM card when the chat features don't stick

I'm just realizing that both Google Messages & Samsung Messages are not working with Chat features! At the beginning it was just GM not working, now SM has joined in and refusing to function. I'm left with having to use Signal as my default sms messenger! Yikes...
