Hello, good people at Samsung, 

There's a lot of real estate on the top of the message app. Can that space be used to add a status option like whatsApp?

Like the mod said that's by design. It's to make the UI reachable. I wouldn't want any touch targets up there honestly. It's why I specifically sought out the Samsung version of Google messages.
