I've noticed lately a few emojis or smiley's directly under message that were never there before but when I try to click on them nothing happens, she's anyone know what this feature is? Or how to use it?

Hey there @Ellin, I hope you're doing well.

Google's Android Messages app is known to have newer emoji's than the system itself from time to time as Google has support for in app emojis. This is to avoid blank or boxed question marks when others who have newer emojis send you one. It's odd that it isn't showing up when you press on it though. Have you tried clearing the apps cache?

That sounds like message reactions. You can react to SMS/MMS/Chat messages in the Android Messages.
