While using Google maps, animation is laggy and the response time when selecting a location is delayed. Switching the phone's display from portrait to landscape is also troublesome with a significant delay as well

That's why I never use Google maps. I recommend using wazes it's a lot better

Google Maps and Waze drop the refresh rate to 60Hz on every Android phone in existence when they are in the foreground. That would explain the laggy animations.

Clear the app cache
