Could you explain more about this please? What would flashing the firmware do if we're on AT&t?

Flashing firmware puts the unlocked Samsung firmware on your device. It removes carrier branding and apps from the device, and will allow you to join the beta. You might loose some carrier related functions though so you'll need to research that part.
