Your photos get backed up to Google so you would be able to retrieve them there. If you want to prepare for an eventual device failure, you can backup your photos to an external device either by direct transfer through file manager or by using Smart Switch. You can use Smart Switch to make a complete backup of your phone to an external drive or computer.
