The current one is secure, google changed how it is done. When you first boot your phone, until you unlock it your data partition is encrypted and not accessible.
The old way was the OS was also but user data is no longer stored with the OS so the phone is allowed to boot now and waits to decrypt the data until code entered vs the phone not being able to boot at all. The new way is faster but same security.
