You can go to accessibilty/afvanced settings an turn on flash notifications. Do you really want your screen turning on every time you get a notification?

That's why I don't like Google Messages cuz I never get my messages I love Samsung Messages and I wish they would lift it alone and let us decide if we don't want to use it but now we can't even update it in the galaxy store
I get notifications from Google Messages all the time, never missed one. I have sounds on, so I can hear the notification. I also see the notification bubble across my screen when it comes in, if I happen to be looking at my phone. In any case, I see the notifications when I unlock my phone. I don't recall whether or not my screen actually turns on, because I don't have my eyes on my phone 100% of the time. I do know, however, that it would annoy me no end if my screen turned on every single time I got a notification. For me, the bubble and the sound is enough. You would miss the screen turning on anyway if you happened to have your phone in your pocket, bag or are just away from it.
As for Samsung Messages and not being able to download it, Samsung has every right to discontinue or change or limit whatever apps they choose to at any time for any reason. It's part of the TOS you agreed to when you put your phone into service.
