It sounds to me like the built-in manager was set as the "default" selection. In case it was, one way to clear it and give you the chance to pick the third party manager is to clear that app data for the built-in one, which would also clear it as the primary choice. After that you should start seeing the "Which app do you wish to use for this action?" popup.
