I would start by deleting the cache and data from the contacts storage app (you will need to enable show sytem apps to search for it) and rebooting the phone. Also make sure the battery usage is optimized. That should not be happening. Tap contacts storage in the battery stats there and see the details

Not true. Data is only settings, not the actual contacts.

Just in case back up your contacts, or make sure they are already backed up in Google.

Available screens and settings may vary by wireless service provider, software version, and model. (Its a great first step to back up your device) One of the steps you will encounter is booting your device in safe mode. This will help determine if there could be a third party app contributing to the issue.
