Hello raynpaul,

Thank you for reaching out. Welcome to the Samsung Community. We understand that your new A36 5g unlocking with the use of your fingers and palm of hand. We understand your concern regarding this. Here are some possible solutions you can try.
Please, check that your fingers and the sensor are clean and dry.
Check your screen protector and ensure it's properly attached. Test without a screen protector.
When using fingerprint to unlock make sure your device is not wirelessly charging. This can cause electric waves to affect the fingerprint recognition performance of your device.
Your device allows multiple fingerprints to be registered in the event of damage or injury with a limit of four. If you wish to remove these : Go to "Settings," then "Biometrics and Security," and then "Fingerprints", then enter your PIN, pattern or password, and then tap on the registered fingerprint you wish to remove. As community member @gamerphoneguy states,  remove your existing fingerprint and re-register it. To register: Go to "Settings," then "Biometrics and Security," and then "Fingerprints", then enter your PIN, pattern or password, tap add fingerprint.
When registering your fingerprint, try different angles and pressure to see if it improves recognition.
Factors like scars, wrinkles, or extremely thin or small fingers may affect fingerprint recognition.

If your fingerprint sensor is still having issues, you can try clearing the temporary data on your phone to fix the problem. This will not delete any of your information from your device.
Turn off your device
Press and hold the volume up button and the Bixby button or side button. If your phone doesn’t have a Bixby button, hold the volume up button. Then press and hold the power key as well.
When the Android logo appears on the screen, release all three keys
