I thinks its from having that contact imported from ios iphone to google? Could that have caused it

Tried those steps the merge and fix option doesn't delete the duplicate phone numbers in contacts.

to your phone's Settings > Accounts and backup > Manage accounts.
Select your Google or Samsung account.
Tap Sync account and turn off contact sync for accounts you don't want, then turn it back on for your main account.
In Google contacts open the Contacts app.
Ensure the correct Google Account is selected at the top.
Tap Fix & manage at the bottom.
Tap Merge & fix, then Merge duplicates
On samsung contacts open Open the Contacts app.
Tap the Menu icon (three horizontal lines).
Select Manage contacts.
Tap Merge contacts (or "Merge duplicates").
The app will show contacts grouped by similar numbers, emails, or names; select the duplicates and tap Merge.
