You may want to choose an alternative to Google messages. Search the internet / playstore for other messaging app options.

One excellent alternative to google messages is the "Textra" messaging app. Within the app, occasionally you'll see an ad, or you can choose to make a ONCE only in-app purchase to remove ads forever which is very cool.
Tap the link below for the playstore download of Textra.

I agree with the negative sentiment. My biggest complaint is that you cannot pick a unique notification sound on Google messages. Maybe Google can start using Samsungs app and support it.

You absolutely can pick custom tones for contacts. Open any contact/ chat, tap on the 3 dots, details, scroll down to notifications, pick a tone.

To set a tone for the app itself for new messages or non-contacts:

Long press on Google Messages app icon, in the pop-up menu tap on the "i" , open notifications, scroll down to notification categories, incoming notifications, sound, pick a tone. Just follow my screenshot path.1776790918935.jpg1776790918953.jpg1776790918976.jpg1776790918994.jpg

This is the screen for notifications. I don't see a method for changing notification sound. I am not interested in sounds for each contact. I want it for all messages. 1776789871552.jpg

The reason you are not seeing the ability to set a tone for the app itself is you haven't toggled on Notification Categories in advanced settings. Go to settings, notifications, advanced settings, toggle on Manage Notification Categories for each app. Now follow the path in my other comment to you.1776793174940.jpg1776793174966.jpg
