The calendar is something that I use, but not enough to have on my home page. When bringing down notifications, you can see the time and date. I would like to press the date and access my calendar for quick, comfortable access.
I agree with @Oxford , you can add the calendar edge panel and slide it out when you want to check your calendar. I don't know why you wouldn't keep the calendar app icon on your home screen, even if not the main one. It doesn't take up any more room than any other icon and you can tap to open it when you want to or not open it when you don't. Unlike a calendar widget that's kind of in your face all the time, even if nothing's on your schedule.
