in WINDOWS -  I can go to any file TYPE, and select what is the default app to open that file.  I am looking for same feature on phone.

SETTINGS -> APPS -> DEFAULT does NOT work

Scenario -  i have password file -  example KeePass.kdbx

it opens with KeePass2Android

I want to store it RENAMED, in OneDrive, with name of Misc.ABC, and still use KeePass2Android to open the file.

that file DOES  OPEN on windows, with KeePass.  AND, it somehow DID open at one point on android phone, but now it does not.  it is not a corrupted file.  I downloaded it, and i LONG-HOLD on it, get the three dots, select "OPEN WITH", and it says that no assigned app can open it, go to the play store.

I do NOT WANT to go to the play store.  I want to directly point to KeePass2Android app, and select that from the phone, to have  it open the file

REASON for this is that if data of OneDrive gets hacked, out of thousands of files in my folders, it would be much harder for a hacker to see that there is a KeePass file on Onedrive.  Even though i've made the password much longer, I still want to mask  the extension.

Please do not reply if your solution is the SETTINGS -> APP -> DEFAULT app.  that does not work, and does not point to file extensions and offer how to open them.

I have samsun galaxy S23+

any assistance appreciated, thanks

That's a trickyone to give a direct answer to as it's a pretty roundabout way with a very specific outcome you want. However I do understand fully what you're asking. I can't give you the literal app name but one solution would be to get yourself a much more featured file explorer from whatever channels you decide to use to download your apps. From that new, more featured file explorer, you should be able to find your renamed file, or even rename it using the new file explorer then also be able to set any specific app you want to open said file by default, regardless of its file extension.

*Edit:
To set whatever app as the default to open your newly named file, typically you would long press or bring up the menu once the file you want opened is highlighted, then press "open with"proceed to scroll to the end of the suggested apps row and click "more"which will open a much larger menu of your apps capable of opening that file extension. Once you find your desired app, press it once then a menu will pop up asking if you want it opened just this once or always. You're going to want to hit always so that anytime you hit that file in the future, it knows you want that particular app to open it.

thanks for reply, and your understanding of what i am doing with this.  i did try to long-hold, right-click, etc, but when you get to "open with", android seems to look at pre-defined extensions, and says "you can't do this, no such extension (or something), go to the play store.

i want to force the PHONE to recognize that i want to use the non-standard extension.

just like "windows", where i can right-click on anything, and do an "OPEN WITH,", and use notepad !!  there may be gibberish inside, but i can stil use notepad.

I used to have a good "files" utility but it is not supportd much anymore, and i use the samsung" files" app, which is ok, but not much features.

I'll keep looking, and again, thanks !

Hence my recommendation to get a MUCH better file explorer. Nothing native is sufficient, what I use is actually a paid explorer widely regarded as the best and most featured on a non rooted phone. I can confirm what you are requesting works, using my choice of file explorer and it's ability to set per file default app opening. It will open whatever file with whatever app you tell it to-now whether or not that file opens after changing it's full regex file extension is on you. I never guaranteed it will open the file successfully, just that it WILL attempt with the app you tell it to regardless of extension name.

The reason I won't give the name is because it's advanced beyond most users ability and requires some decent knowledge of adb and even shell if you want to do certain things but have no root access. I never recommend or give names to apps that ask for anything aside from standard permissions for obvious reasons!

how about a list of possibilities, and  i can explore them?  I don't mind experimenting, I accept all disclaimers, computer can blow up, catch on fire, phone may melt in my hand ( s ), or vaporize, etc

i use bitlocker (windows), I protect the password  in  multiple places, data backed up in multiple places, etc, etc.  so any list to explore is appreciated, and i don't mind paying for something if it does a good job.

For an app to recognize a file, you must keep the extension, regardless of what you name it.  No extension, no recognition.  Even in WIndows.  In Windows you can rename the *shortcut* and eliminate the extension, but the actual file name remains the same with the extension intact.  This is a basic rule of computing. Even if you had eliminated an extension on a file name and used the "open with" function, some developers make it so the extension is necessary in order for their files to be opened as a security measure.  Are you that paranoid that you think people are rooting around your OneDrive for your keypass file? Are you prone to hackers? Have you fallen for a Microsoft scam and gave up the password to your Microsoft account? Other than someone giving access to their OneDrive or Microsoft account in some way, I have never heard of a data breach of OneDrive. Not saying it couldn't/didn't happen, but it would have been BIG news.

again, as in my original  post, that  is  what i  want to do  (have file name masked).    I do not trust any applications out there.  i've already been hacked/identity thefted multiple times, including social security number, by all  the big companies that tell me they secure my data.

thanks

junk.txt - (windows) - rename to junk.pp  (I see all extensions, i removed  the  .txtextension)

right click - OPEN WITH -  notepad

this works.

does  not need the .TXT extension, it is able to open the .PP extension.

that is what i want to do in android.

it is a .KBDX file, but i want to renameit, and have the app (keepass2Android) open it.  it DID open one of my test files, but it is quirky, can't always do an "open with".

thanks

That seems like it's most likely a resriction by the app developer than an Android or Samsung restriction. Android apps funtion differently that Windows programs. You sgould reach out to the developers to see if they have a solution for you. As for not trusting applications, you certainly are not only using one to keep all your passwords, but you are choosing to use OneDrive. Doesn't make sense to me. Mist people who have suffered hacks give up the cloud in gavir of a flash drive. Why not try that? You can keep it on a keychain, wear it around your neck, encrypt it and always have it with you.
