I bought a brand new unlocked A36 and have a virtual SIM in it.    I have wifi turned on, did all updates.  Found the carrier I use and picked it and also and turned  data roaming off.    As this is an "emergency" type phone I'll be keeping in my car most of the time, I then turned mobile data off  and also turned off "use background data"  for every app to that let me (the one exception I think is google play) which doesn't let me hit the slider.

Every time I turn the phone on, if I go to settings immediately, mobile data seems to be initially off, but then a short time later something turns it back on.   If I then turn it off, it seems to stay off but haven't fully confirmed this.

Is there a way to find out what's turning it back on????    Getting ready to ask for my $ back for this phone as I don't want to be charged for data on this thing by turning it on and forgetting to go through these annoying steps...  Never happened with my old phone from another brand but this one just doesn't seem to honor my request to keep mobile data off.

Saw some other post on another forum that said to try to pick the carrier after you select it and tell it not to use mobile data.   I can't find any such option.   Perhaps because I have a virtual sim or maybe that suggestion was from an older android version that did have such an option.

Go to settings/connections/wi-fi then tap the dot menu and select inteligent wi-fi. Make sure "turn wi-fi on/off auromatically" is turned off.

When went to intelligent wifi, switch to mobile data setting was on and wouldn't let me change (disabled).   Said I had to enable mobile data to change so I temporarily turned on mobile data, then turned off switch to mobile data under intelligent wifi.  Then turned off mobile data again.   As for turn  wifi data off automatically, that was already off.    When I shut down and started again, mobile data turned on again when I restarted so the suggestion didn't help

Mobile data and wi-fi are two different things. The "switch to mobile data" control is meant to switch you to mobile data if your wi-fi is unstable. It won't switch if mobile data is off.

If your mobile data is turning itself on for no apparent reason, check your Wi-Fi calling settings and make sure wi-fi preferred is selected. If the issue persists, you can keep your phone in airplane mode at all times with wi-fi and Bluetooth turned on. You'll only be able to get and make calls when connected to a wi-fi network, but you can turn airplane mode off when you know you are not going to be connected. You can even create a routine to automate the process.

If all that fails to find the culprit that is turning your mobile data on, put in an error report.

You can also create a custom mode that you can activate/deactivate at will. Only one mode can run at a time, but routines can run with modes, or several routines can run at a time if they do not conflict. Since this is an emergency phone, I suggest keeping it in airplane mide until you need to actually use it. Incidentally, you should never keep these phones a a car all the time, as prolonged extreme heat or cold may damage it.1755616008593.jpg1755616008629.jpg

Yes, I get that mobile and wifi data are different... I just don't know why when I specifically say to turn mobile data OFF, that something is turning it back on.   Every time I turn the phone on, if I immediately view the mobile data setting by going to"settings/connections/data usage/mobile data" .   I see it off and then "magically" the slider moves to on often while I have the screen open.   I have no idea what's turning it on.   That's why I'm turning off anything that even has anything to do with any kind of data to try to finally get it to stay off and discover what might be turning it on.

I'm not aware of any log that shows what might be turning a setting like that on but was hoping someone else might know and/or know something else that might turn it on.

There's so many things that can work via either a mobile obtained IP or a wifi obtained IP, but seems like if you tell the phone not to use mobile data, it shouldn't turn it on to get a mobile IP...

I set a mobile data size limit and warning equal to my current value and now am seeing alerts claiming it's no longer using mobile data.   However, that's still not preventing mobile data for automatically turning on (which it still is).    I also know there's a mobile data usage graph that told me what used mobile data... again useful but not telling me what's turning it on.   I know I can change the date range of the graph but currently still have it reporting monthly.    Will be interesting to see what it claims is using mobile data "next month"--again useful but that alone isn't saying what's turning it on.

First, you should set the data limit for just a bit lower than your current allocation.  Second you should set your data warning for a few GB less than the limit. (you can override the cap if it reaches it).  Make sure data saver is on. Have you tried the routine I set up for you? Again, why not just keep the phone in airplane mode, since it's not your primary phone?  I can think of no app or setting (other than a routine) that will automatically turn mobile data on when it's been turned off.
