Little Key emoji on top scree

My little key emoji on the top right screen keeps flashing off then on .sometimes I see it turn off. Anyone know what it means and does?

A key symbol in your status bar indicate the use of a VPN. Do you have one set up?

Sure but why does it go off at times

This would typically mean that the VPN connection is unstable.
