Whatsapp is installed and working.
On Whatsapp on other devices when you get an incoming chat .... you get a number of the bottom right hand corner of the icon.
Great if you missed the notification sound, away from your phone etc.

Currently if I get an incoming WhatsApp chat message it does not get a number or increase the number to match messages.

How can I get this back working - tried de-install and reinstall - no change.

Contacted WhatsApp they asked me to check that notifications & badges were enabled - which they were., at that point they said its a phone issue.

I don't know which of the above steps was the successful one .... but when I got to the end it's now working.
I think there was something wrong with notifications and badges, and turning off, removing WhatsApp and reinstalling and then enabling cured things.

you can try the following steps:

  1. Check Notification Settings:

    • Open your device's Settings.
    • Tap on "Apps" or "Applications" and find WhatsApp in the list.
    • Tap on WhatsApp and go to "Notifications" or "App Notifications".
    • Ensure that notifications and badges are enabled for WhatsApp.
  2. Clear App Cache:

    • Go to your device's Settings.
    • Tap on "Apps" or "Applications" and find WhatsApp in the list.
    • Tap on WhatsApp and go to "Storage" or "Storage & cache".
    • Tap on "Clear cache" to clear the app's cache.
  3. Restart Your Device:

    • Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve minor issues. Restart your device and check if the message count on the WhatsApp icon is now showing correctly.
  4. Update WhatsApp:

    • Make sure you have the latest version of WhatsApp installed on your device. Go to your device's app store (Google Play Store or Apple App Store) and check for any available updates for WhatsApp. Update the app if necessary.
  5. Reinstall WhatsApp:

    • If the issue persists, you can try uninstalling WhatsApp from your device and then reinstalling it.
    • Uninstall WhatsApp by going to your device's Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Uninstall.
    • After uninstalling, go to your app store and reinstall WhatsApp.
    • Set up WhatsApp again and check if the message count on the icon is now working
