Hi. Can someone tell me how to change the notification sound on Google messages. I also have Samsung messages, but Google is the default for my phone. Thanks.

sorry i see things have changed a bit, i see others have given you more details below, if you go into.any text message , the 3 dots are at top, click it . you will see details then notifications , sound etc ..

First Turn This On:

ā€¢  Settings  >
ā€¢  Notifications  >
ā€¢  Advanced Settings  >
ā€¢  Turn "Manage Notification Categories for Each App" On

Change Notification
Sound:

ā€¢  Settings  >
ā€¢  Apps  >
ā€¢  Google Messages  >
ā€¢  Notifications  >
ā€¢  Allow Notifications Must be On  >
ā€¢  Notification  Categories  >
ā€¢  Click on Incoming Messages  >

ā€¢  Sound  >
ā€¢  Choose a Notification Sound.

This must be on, otherwise "Notification Categories" won't be displayed :

I did not scroll down far enough to see the Manage Notification Categories for Each App. Once I turned it on, it worked. Thanks for sharing.

Open your recent apps and tap the google message icon above it and then select App info scroll down to Notifications and tap then go to Notification categories and then tap on Incoming messages and you should see the option for Sounds to pick 

A easy way is too open Google messages and click your picture in the the top right and select messages settings then click Notifications and click on Behavior, sounds & more
